Catching up is Hard

Hi everyone.

Been away for quite a while this time! Well, I am back. Now for the good stuff!

The Dalai Lama has influenced my thoughts over the past couple of years. I am very glad that I have started to listen to him. I love the way he treats everything with respect. Everyone is equal in his eyes. Including the crazy people no one else likes.

I have been wondering about previous lives lately. I see places I know I have never been to in this life time, yet they are familiar places and I can remember features that I know exist there. One such place is in Massachusetts. I can remember barns and a house. I can no longer find the house, but I can remember the garden and the location so clearly. In this lifetime, I have never been to Massachusetts. It is a memory of a past lifetime I have lived. I remember being happy. I remember working hard on the land. I remember raising 8 children.

I remember another life in France. In the Eastern section of the country. I remember living a life of a servant for a lord. His home was palatial. I don't remember more than that.

I often wonder how many of these previous lives I have lived and where they were. I know I am a good mother which leads me to presume I have practiced it often. I love having children around me. Children bring out my youth again. And great fun is always to be had around them. That might be the spur which lead to teaching as a career in this lifetime.

I have enjoyed my teaching career very much. Made lots of good friends among my students. I have taught some of my first students children and, in one case, taught a student's grandchild too. It is wonderful to see the different generations as they follow each other in this ever-changing world.

Anyway, back to work. I am no longer doing internet marketing to any great degree. There are health reasons behind that change. The only company I am still involved with is Affordable Affiliates. It is making me money. I know the owner, Chris Bell. He is a really special person. In this business, he found a way to remain active in business, raise his children, and give a percentage back to his community through charitable donations. It is a great requirement. I love the idea that it is all taken care of by the company too. Since being diagnosed with dementia, I would not want to forget this valuable part of my life. Memories

I saw this video for the first time tonight. Sure brought back memories. I grew up in Vancouver. The city has always been a jewel and this video really shows that it still is even though the population has ballooned from that of a small city to that of a grand metropolis.

Now, I live in Chilliwack. It is growing like Vancouver did when I was a child. But it is not on the ocean, which makes the scenery very different. Only 60 miles apart, the cities are tied by belonging to the same valley. Other than that, they are both very diffent cities.

I still love Vancouver 60 years later and visit regularly. But, with the high traffic volumes there now, I no longer want to live there. I used to walk every day just to look at the mountains sitting to the north of the city. In winter, the snow-covered mountains looked like jewel encrusted crowns surrounding the City's perimeter. Protecting Vancouver from all the bad things to come.

The lights of the city are spectacular even when the ocean fog rolls in. No fog is thick enough to completely block them out. It is not for lack of trying though! When I was attending Simon Fraser University, I can remember many trips up and down Burnaby Mountain that were slow. I had to drive very slowly with my window down so I could follow the white line down the middle of the road. It was the only way to be sure I was still on the road. I missed a corner once and aimed my truck down until I was back on the road again. I only took out a few small trees though. You would not do that now, you would take out the condos!

I love memories.

When did you find the Love in your Heart?

When I watched this video, I cried. Again. When I watch the news, I cry. Again. When I turn on the television, I cry. Again.

I have been on a spiritual search for love and kindness in the world. Instead, I find sorrow, sadness, misfortune, despair, loss, and more. It hurts my heart to see all the terrible things that have been happening. Wars, earthquakes, tsunamis, fires, landslides. Always something happening, and always people crying.

I found love and kindness with my friends, but not with strangers. Who will help those others? I can try, but if I think on it too much, I become discouraged and fearful. Again. Then I stop trying. Again.

We cannot quit. We cannot leave these things happen. We cannot forget the other people in this world. We must do what we can, small or large, to make our world a better place.

They tell us there is enough food for all. Why do some have too much and others too little? They tell us that 3/4 of the world is covered with water. Why do some people have lots, enough for swimming pools, fountains and more. Why do others have no safe drinking water? no crops? no water to give their animals.?

We send our young men out to fight battles. Some are important in our eyes, some are not. They come home in body bags and coffins, but still we send them. Why do we do that?

Now, with such a disastrous earthquake that has hit Haiti, we send men, women, and aid. The supplies are not getting to where they need to go. What is the reason that some people, even in times of need, greedily keep the supplies to themselves, or try to sell them for profits? How much of the supplies that we are sending are getting through to where they are needed?

Find the Love in your heart to help without judging. Find it in your heart to help without saying what's in it for me. Find the love in your heart for all mankind to offer help and support without expectations.

I found the love in my heart when I saw the pictures of the Afghan war. With the sight of soldiers dying. I found the love in my heart when I saw the pictures of the devastation in Thailand after that terrible Tsunami in 2006. I found the love in my heart when I saw the crumbling houses and streets in Haiti last week.

We all have that love within us, but it is up to us all to choose to show and use it for the good of others. We should never be selfish. If al we can do is provide a few blankets, then do it. If all we can do is send food, send it. If all we have to offer is small change, offer it. Large or small, any help is appreciated by those who realy need it.

We are here for a reason.

Having a happy life is easier than you might think. I have made the decision after listening to the Dali Lama that it is up to me to have a happy life. So How do I do that? I have been thinking on it and trying some new things to see what works.

First, I discussed this with my family. All of them agreed that looking outside myself for happiness is not the way to go. Happiness is always inside you. You can be in very happy situations and surrounded by very happy people and still not feel happy within yourself. Only you can change what you feel inside yourself.

Secondly, I spoke with my friends about this. For the past few weeks, the topic has come up in many conversations. The final conclusion does not change though. We have all come to an agreement. Happiness is something you can control. How is up to each person and situation, but it is under your own control. Where do I go from here?

I have been looking at my own thought patterns. What thoughts come to my mind and how I treat them. Upon realizing that not all my thoughts are positive in outlook, actually many are quite negative, it has become important to me and my happiness to learn to control them. It is much more difficult that I expected. I suppose the habits of 62 years of life on this earth in this lifetime has ingrained some negative ideas firmly enough to make them difficult to remove. Now comes the work.

Fortunately, I have some great friends who are helping me to learn this. I have found great resources here for learning. Check out this site! The amount of knowledge to be found there is huge!

Just browsing around this morning and I checked a site I had not read in a while. On it I found some comments about Derik's case that I had not read before. I was especially intrigued by the new posts by Derik's fiancee, Jasminda. I know she could write, but was suprised by her eloquence in this one! Way to go Jasminda! It is extremely hard in Canada to get a wrongful convicton overturned. We may never be able to do that.

My biggest issue with the system of incarceration we have here is the lack of parole availability. Our Parole Board states over and over that he will not see the outside of a prison without confessing to the crime. That volates the Criminal Code of Canada, is against the National Parole Board's own policies, flies in the face of the agreements Canada has signed with other countries under the United Nations umbrella, and is just not fair.

Derik, because he has family and friends who support him, has been able to stay away from the bad things that happen in our prisons on a regular basis. For example, he has not started using drugs, which are so readily available inside our prisons. Other prisoners have told me drugs are not only more avalable, they are cheaper than on the street. Drugs are the biggest problem inside our prisons. Management tries many things to solve the issue, but the roadblocks set up by the Guard's Union keep the measures from being more effective. Sure searching visitors catches some of the drugs being brought in, but not searching the gym bags and other containers brought in by guards gives a large avenue of importation that is not being closed off.

The only way to stop that door is to remove guards from the front entrances and replace them with a different security force such as the Commissionaires. That way, union members are not searching other union members. It would close a very large portal for getting contraband into the prisons.

The lack of family support becomes more apparent when we attend social events in the prisons. I have been approached by many prisoners who have not seen any family members or friends since being incarcerated. There are many reasons for this, but from what I have seen, visiting is not encouraged by the system. Although they give mouth to a great policy and openness for visiting, in actual practice, it does not happen easily. My husband has not seen his son for nearly 3 years now because they do not like his words. He writes letters to upper anagement noting obvious, glaring errors in the functioning of the visitng process. Because he embarrasses them, he is not allowed to visit. Derik has even been told to shut his father up and he might get parole! What a farce!

I can't help everyone, but I have supported some men who finally were able to gain parole. All except one have stayed out because they had someone to talk to outside of the prison environment. Someone who could give advice, support ( not with money) and just be friendly. These men are doing fine now. workng, supporting themselves and in some cases, their families, participating in outreach activties in the prisons, and more. Many more helpful people are needed in order to reduce Canada's growing prison population. Our Federal Government and its policies make it a very hard place to be.

Message from a Friend

I received this poem from a friend today. She reminded me of the one flaw in women that can hold them back from higher achievements. When I read it I realized the truth. We were made to place everyone else above ourselves. In order to do really well in business, we have to develop our own sense of self worth, because without that, we will not progress.

One Flaw In Women

Women have strengths that amaze men.
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness, love and joy.

I think I have fixed the hacker issues on my computer.

Well, I think I have finally gotten all the bugs caused by the hacker fixed. Two attacks! persistent little devil.

note: my new Skype id that is now available for you all to contact me is coach_elouise. I tried to keep something close to what people are used to seeing on my sites. I sure hope none of you got any of the extremely rude messages the hacker was sending out for a couple of days. If you did, I apologize as they were not from the real me! I do not speak to people that way, especially friends.

Now we can get on with the rest of our lives.

If life happens to deliver a situation to you that you cannot handle, do Not attempt to resolve it yourself! Kindly put it in the SFGTD (something for God to do) box. I will get to it in MY TIME. All situations will be resolved, but in My time, not yours.

Once the matter is placed into the box, do not hold onto it by worrying about it. Instead, focus on all the wonderful things that are present in your life now.

If you find yourself stuck in traffic, don't despair. There are people in this world for whom driving is an unheard of privilege.

Should you have a bad day at work; think of the man who has been out of work for years.

Should you despair over a relationship gone bad; think of the person who has never known what it's like to love and be loved in return.

Should you grieve the passing of another weekend; think of the woman in dire straits, working twelve hours a day, seven days a week to feed her children.

You won't get an actual email like this from God, but isn't it nice to know He is there to help? God is different for many people and faiths. He has many names in different parts of the world, but He is still the Creator and in touch with all of us.

Not everyone believes in God, but even if you don't believe it is comforting to know there is someone or something watching over us. I personally do believe in God, although I do not go to church. I feel him watching over and protecting me even when I do not pray.

If it is not God watching over me, then it must be some other great spirit. or the collective spirit of mankind. There are still so many things we do not know about the universe and our part in it. Let us keep the open mind we have searching for the truth and learning as much as we can.

Beautiful Scenes, Beautiful music, One can easily understand the sentiment without knowing the words. A good friend sent me the link for this beautiul piece.

I listened to the music and watched the pictures and felt a great peace come over me. It made all my problems seem small in the overall cosmic universe we all live in. I don't feel small, but now my problems do. I know I can make my problems go away if I want to. Truly inspiring.

The monetary issues are always there for me. I owe, I owe, so off to work I used to go. I don't do that any more. I work from my home. I love being able to go down to the creek and watch the geese, both the wild ones and the tame ones we own.

The geese have a lot to teach us. The wild ones have picked a quiet spot in our yard, along the creekbank, to have their babies and raise them. The tame ones accept the food we leave for them and lay eggs for us. They expect the food to be there. It is my choice to feed them or not. I choose to feed them because of the eggs I get in return. Even the wild geese accept the food, but they do not leave their eggs, they leave lessons in raising young.

Taking these lessons, I am changing the way I do internet marketing. It is not ok to push my businesses on to the whole world and say "Buy This Now!". That makes me greedy and forceful, but gets me nothing in return. I don't want to be a greedy, money grubber. I want to be helpful. I want to share. I want to inspire you to grow and succeed too.

Sunshine

Sunshine. I just love sunshine! Nothing makes me happier than sunshine.

So have I said it enough times? Sunshine has that ability to calm nerves, inspire action, cheer up the blues, and so much more. When I get up in the morning and the sun is shining, I have more motivation to get things accomplished. I can check my emails, respond to those that require one, and still feel like surfing. But then, the sun moves up a little more and all I want to do is go out there and walk in the warmth.

I have the freedom to do that because I have found a couple of very good opportunities to obtain multiple streams of income. Without those, I would not have the freedom to walk in the sunshine.

The one I like most is one that allows me to teach others as well as learn more myself. I love to learn and I really love to help others learn too. I love it when a plan comes together. With this program, or maybe I should call it a slate of programs, I have many choices.

John Ralston Saul

I went to listen to the annual multicultural lecture at the Chan Theatre at University of British Columbia last night. It was very interesting for me being a Canadian. My ancesters were among the very first to settle this great country. I always wondered why Canada's relations with its Aboriginal peoples was so much better than our neighbours.

Our neighbours and many other countries settled the same way treated Aboriginals like they were the interlopers. Aboriginals were pushed out of the way for immigrants to take the land and resources. Maybe not right away, but as soon as the European settlers became numerous enough to survive without help, they did so.

Canada's early settlers would not have survived their first winter without the help of the Aboriginal peoples in the area. That they did survive is a testiment to them, and a testiment to the Aboriginal peoples who taught them what was safe to eat, how to make a shelter from the cold, and so much more. Canada began right off the hop with a dialogue, a conversation with the native peoples.

John Saul talked abut all this, and especially how Canada has 3 legs that it stands on. The French, The English and Loyalists, and the Aboriginals. His main theme is that as long as all three legs remain strong, so will the country.

I agree with him for the most part, but I have noticed a decline in the conversation. I don't believe that the newest generations of immigrants to Canada are being properly included in the conversation. I am seeing a lot more influence to Canada's great culture by relatively large groups of other immigrants. There is no conversation between these new groups and the three founding legs. We are losing our special bond between all Canadians by leaving these groups out of the conversation.

Canada cannot take steps that will lead us to the types of rulings and laws that are enforced in other nations. We have to continue the conversations with all our groups included in order not to lose the orality of our nation. We must keep the conversations open and active. We must keep the conversations flowing.

Canada will not survive as we know and love it if we start only looking at written laws and rules. Our Aboriginals did not write laws, they negotiated them amongst the group. When my ancesters came to join this marvelous land, they tried to ring the written laws with them. They would write reports back to England and France, but not all was told in the written reports. The oral conversations were not reported. The far away masters thought they knew everything, but they did not. The ongoing conversations between the peoples involved led to a peaceful co-existence, There was no need for a large government to tell everyone what their jobs were. There was a great co-operation and working together for surviva of the peoples involved.

That is what we need to get back to. I don't mean fur trade, or anything like that, I mean we need to keep the conversations going and involving everyone to keep this country as stable as it has been all these hundreds of years.

The trouble with Snow

I should have known it was going to be a bad day when I left the house I had spent the night at, late for meeting up with prison staff, and with a new route to follow that I had not tried before, and discovered it was snowing!!
So far, every time it has snowed this winter, something has gone awry. This time I was concerned about my son’s parole hearing. That is where I was headed. Following the new route Steven had given me, I actually made it to the appointment with 30 seconds to spare. Despite the blowing snow and the winding twisty road I drove.
Made it safely, so now we wait. The prison staff put us upstairs in the main office building, in the board room, to wait. About a half hour later, Derik's IPO (internal parole officer) Marion Higgins, brought him upstairs to sit with us. We just had a general conversation in which Marion told us a bit of the history behind the place. William Head Institution had first been built as a quarantine area for new immigrants from the Orient. Many Chinese and Japanese immigrants did not make it out of there. Those who were or became ill and died are buried in a corner of the property that is maintained as a Canadian Heritage site by the Federal Government. I felt it would be very interesting to take a walk around there, but this was not the day.
The prison began as a minimum security camp with no fences, then became medium security wit a three roll barbed wire fence cutting it off from the rest of the penninsula. Now, it is a minimum again, but the fence is still there. Parole hearings are a regular occurrence as prisoners serving long sentences, like Derik, has the right to have one every 2 years once they reach a minimum length of time served. For Derik, that time was 10 years. He has now been in prison for 17 years, but has not gained any release yet. We were hoping for something this time, but not really expecting anything like full parole.
Because the prison is located on the tip of a penninsula, we walked down to the visiting room, where the hearing was being held, in the rain, not snow. The 3 members of the board were already seated. The assistant got the IPO from Derik's previous institution on the phone and then the members of the press (6) and the relatives of the victims (8) were brought in and seated behind us. We had to face the board, his current IPO sitting with us, and were not permitted to turn around to see the people being seated behind us. There was a significant distance between the groups to prevent any possibility of interaction. Derik had pointed out to the prison staff that one of the relatives had physically assaulted me at one of our many court appearances, so that was one reason for the caution, and the larger room than was normally used.
The hearing started as it usually did with the board members wanting to discuss his crime. That part was naturally short as Derik still maintains that he is innocent. Even after such a long time in prison, he will not make up a confession. He is maintaining his innocence while assuring his continued incarceration. The next part was longer. Going back to his childhood, they wanted to know if his father was controlling. One statement they questioned is that I have to call him before I leave the house. I explained later, when I had a chance to speak, that we both did that. In our opinion, it made sense that someone know where you are in case something happened. At the very least, it gives a starting point for a search should someone not make it home. We kept in close touch with each other and with our children for that reason. I am sure some people might call us controlling, but we always knew where our children were and when to expect them home.
The chairperson also appeared to fixate on the fact that, as a boy, he carried a pocket knife. Derik explained that based on his rural upbringing for the first 13 years of his life. Nearly every boy carried a pocket knife in a rural area. You never knew when you might want to whittle a sling shot fork, or cut some binder twine to save an animal's life, or any other emergency fix. I don't think that the city people really understood that.
Once they were done questioning Derik, then it was my turn to speak on his behalf. I tried to give an eloquent testimonial on his progress since going to prison, expecially in the past few years. Derik had ended the questioning telling them about the programs he took, the effort he made to understand his behaviour, the self help books he read and worked through, the issues he had identified on his own and worked through, and the relationship he had been building with his fiancee over the past 9 years. I did an overview of the incarceration as a ping pong type of relationship building. They would tease him with a program and then say he did not fit the profile and yank it away. This happened 14 times. Most times he was screened out because he already had the skills they were trying to teach. For a couple of them, he was screened out as not being violent enough, and not willing to confess to the crime for which he is innocent. Finally, they had to give him one. Ottawa had to override the requirements to get him in there, but Derik worked very hard at getting the most benefit from the program as he could. However, the Parole Board did not believe that it was enough. Following my input, 2 of the relatives read impact statements. One was a very emotional short statement about the love lost when one sister died. The other one was a rant. He told the board that Derik should get out only after he received training to get a job and had the conditions put on him to repay the costs of his imprisonment.
Then Derik had the last word.
We were all ushered out in the reverse order than being ushered in, once again to avoid any contact between the 2 groups of people. The waiting began again. Suddenly, the phone rang and we were once again being summoned to the meeting room. There we got the decision. Day parole denied. Full parole denied.
I requested direction from the board members, and the only response was to continue with making improvements like he had been most recently. Once again, we left, ushered out in groups. We had another half hour visit with Derik and his IPO while the relatives were leaving the grounds. It was a good unwinding session. Both of us were on the verge of tears, relief that it was over and release of the tension.
Stopping just past the prison property, we gane an interview to CBC and GlobalTV news, once again standing in the rain as it changed back into snow. Arriving at the climic where my daughter works, it was now hailing ferociously. And again, following a great dinner with my daughter and granddaughter, I was driving in a near blinding snow storm.
A 30 minute drive, a 60 minute wait, an hour and a half ferry ride, and I was on the highway home. Surprise! Another snow storm on this side too! Two hours of that messy highway driving and I was finally back home. Snow and ice the entire way!
It is now April 2. No longer April Fools Day. At 2 am the snow is stopping and turning again to rain. Thank God that Day is over!

Why Calling Something A Scam Is A Scam.

This is a topic I have wanted to write about for many years but was worried I may “offend” some people. I no longer care. Over the last five years I have purchased about $100,000 worth of information online. I did this to stay ahead of the curve and improve my odds on being successful. In the last year I have started to notice that almost every author I buy from has someone calling them a “scam”. How is it possible that every known expert on the internet is a “scam”?

I started to do some research. I randomly picked some people who have affected my life in a positive way. I did a Google search on

Anthony Robbins- apparently he is a scam. He has only sold millions of books and helped untold amounts of people.

Donald Trump- Self made billionaire, tv show host, best selling author. Guess what also called a scam.

Oprah - Self made billionaire and super philanthropist. Also called a scam. Impossible you say? More like unbelievable.

Now just for fun I thought I would enter the search term Mother Theresa. There is no way that someone could call an icon, a person of such amazing levels of compassion, a saint, a scam is there? Wrong. There is actually a website that calls her a fraud and an evil person. That one blew my mind.

How could all these people and there businesses be a scam? The truth is….they aren’t. The true scammer is the person writing the article about them.

Now I am not saying that there aren’t illegal or illigitimate businesses out there. There are. But not anywhere close to as many as you think. At least 98% of people and businesses that are of accused being a scam are being improperly labeled. Here are the three reasons why calling something a scam is a scam.

1) People take zero responsibility for the decisions they make. Then they buy some information or start a business and when it doesn,t work for them they call it a scam. Did they do the research? Did they follow the instructions? Were they under capitalized? There are so many reasons why a person can fail and 99% of them are there fault.

2) They want to “ride the coat tails”. This means they have something they want to sell and they leverage the successful person’s traffic to get people to there website. If you ever see someone selling something right after they trash a person on there site then understand it is a marketing tactic. It has zero credibility.

3) Consumer protection-like sites. These are the biggest scammers out there. Most of owners cannot even be found for a reason. They are constantly being sued for slander but if you can’t find them you can’t sting them. They allow uneducated people to whine and complain about people and companies without verifying the validity of anything. You could even go on these sites as an employee of a company and randomly trash your competition….without anyone verifying the truth. So why do these sites exist? So the owners can sell advertising spots on there website. They are cockroaches. Plain and simple.

I hope this article gets passed around to millions of people. I want to educate everyone on how ridiculous things are getting. If you have a bad experience with something then ask yourself if you could have done something more.

Why?

Because that is how you learn. If you never take any responsibility for your failures then it makes it almost impossible to succeed. Look at the people who have the results you want and copy them. Don’t rip them down.

Don’t be a coward and call them a scam.

This is a huge topic and is one that you must completely understand. Otherwise, you will get ripped off and lose a lot of money. Let me explain what multiple streams of income are and what they are not. Multiple streams of Income are a concept that many millionaires use to have many revenue avenues. Michael Corcoran, who was the founder of the first multiple income stream marketing system on the internet in 2001, would agree with this concept.

When Mike Corcoran created the first Multiple income stream marketing system, he never imagined how so many people would take advantage of this concept and use it against you to rip you off. Before I get into detail about the ways that these so called "internet Guru’s" are taking advantage of you, I’ll get into the way it was intended to be used.

Multiple income streams was intended for a person to start a business with one company, affiliate program, MLM or direct sales company. It was intended for a person to master one program, have success with it for a minimum of one to two years and then add another business to the portfolio when, and only when, the first business was running on autopilot. While still running the first business, putting little time into it because it was running so well, focus a little more time and money into the second business to get that one up to speed where it was duplicating the results of the first business. This is how you can double your results. Like, I said, it usually would take a year or two to get a business and multiple incomes up to the level where they were running on autopilot.

If you have spent many years developing the above strategy, it is alright to add a third or a fourth business to the portfolio as long as you maintained the original businesses. Adding more than one business to your portfolio in less than a year just proves that person is not focused and says a lot about their character. Having a total of more than 3-4 businesses in a portfolio just means that a person is simply a program jumper and is out to take your money.

Program jumping is becoming more and more popular these days from these so called "internet guru’s". This is a typical case in which someone is a program jumper. Watch out for these people. If someone has joined three programs in 6 months time, they are a program jumper. Program jumping makes sense for the leader of jump. They usually say things like "Bran New" or "Get in Early" or "This one is so much better". The truth is, they take all the followers from program to program to program. They make excuses of why they left to old program to find another one. The truth is, they have suckered all the people they can sucker into the first program and their income is suffering, so they say they’ve found a better mouse trap over here, so come and join me over here and you’ll make a ton of money with me over here….I know people who have joined 5 programs in 7 months. Anytime a new program came on the market, they were in it, suckered all the people they could into it until the next new program came about.

I know several people, who on the outside look great, but jump ship every two months. They put together training packages, marketing tools such as capture pages and auto responders, professionally written letters, etc. They look like a leader until you pay them $1000 for program A, then another $1000 for program B, the $1500 for program C and so on. Pretty soon, they are rich, you’re broke and left to fend for yourself.

Use your common sense out there. Do your homework before you join anything with anybody. The first question should be, What else do you promote? What have you tried? How many have you tried this year? Last year? If they do NOT have a stable track record, run for the hills. Think about it. If you were an employer and wanted to hire an employee and you get an applicant that has had four jobs this year alone, would you hire them? NO Way! You know that by the time you trained them, they would leave looking for more money! Isn’t that right?

My suggestion, use your common sense and beware of the so called "Internet Guru". They disguise themselves as an expert, but they are really just program jumpers.

This business will explode for you and in months you will have a very good income stream.

The scammer sets the trap by offering access to a host of companies looking to farm out basic scut work--say, typing a three or four lines of text into an electronic form, over and over again, to fulfill some sort of advertising campaign. The catch: Many of the suckers who pay the access fee (perhaps $100) never get to do any typing at all. Often, either the work opportunity doesn't exist, or if it does, payment might be an entry to a sweepstakes or even some free merchandise--no cash. Another permutation on this bait-and-switch: Users are enticed into paying for the opportunity to fill out surveys for a cash reward, only to find that they don't fit the rigidly specific demographics required to complete it.

Received this today from a friend. Been caught in one of these myself. The opportunities look so real that it seems like a good idea. But then you don't get anything back. I have found a few actual paying opportunities like this though, so I don't believe there is a for sure if it looks like it is too easy, then it is. Paid survey club has given me quite a few that do pay. I am now paying the advertising for my opportunity by doing some surveys.

Since August, the wheels have rumbled! Staff at Matsqui finally completed the paperwork for the transfer to lower security. William Head Institution put pressure on them to get the transfer done before this week so he could take part in the framing course that is starting tomorrow. It is a lead in to the carpentry apprenticeship that he is transferring there to take.

He is there now for a week. Of course, his clothes and personal effects will take another month to arrive. He is happy to be near the ocean once more. It has been 17 years since he could listen to the waves crash and break.

I went to Victoria by ferry to visit him a couple of days after his transfer. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to see him as my visiting status had expired in October. That was something that does happen every two years, but I had put new forms in to Matsqui Institution in September after receiving a warning that it was about to expire. They lost the forms, but neglected to tell me. Now I have to re-apply and wait for approval. I filled in the forms while at William Head and turned them in. They lost those ones too. Go figure!

Since then, the framing course has started and Derik is not in it. They chose to put it available to only those who are to be released within the next 4 months. Since he does not have a date for his parole hearing yet, he has no release date. The system had to put off his parole hearing once again because the officer at Matsqui again refused to do any of the paperwork required.

He is learning to cook for himself and quite liking the freedom that entails. Once again, he is sitting and waiting. None of his personal effects have arrived yet. Likely will take another month to get them. He is surviving with the change of clothes and limited hygiene items he brought with him.

He is much happier despite all this as he is not under the same bullying constraints he had at Matsqui. The wheels of change roll so slowly that they appear to stand still.

Remembrance and prisons

November 11 is always a soft and quiet day around our family gatherings. We remember the two uncles who fought in the first world war, one of them especially as he died in the trenches of France. His name was Ismael Boivin. the second world war brought more sad memories. Both my father and my husband's father were overseas. They were both in battles. My father was so severely wounded that the army reported him as missing in action and likely dead to his family. He was speaking German, his first language, while in the coma, so they thought he was a prisoner. Once that was cleared up, he worked in intelligence for a year until the end of the war.

Every year we all wear our poppies with pride. This year, however, was different.

My son is in one of Canada's prisons. There, he lives a lifestyle not unlike that of a prisoner of the Nazis. In years past, he was able to organize poppy sales and all the inmates wore their poppies on November 11. This year, the powers that be cited unstated security concerns regarding the wearing of poppies by prisoners. No one was permitted to purchase one, or get one brought in, or have a staff member provide one. It changed the atmosphere completely inside those stone walls. Pride of country diminished again.

Please write to the Royal Canadian Legion near you or to their headquarters to voice your concern about this terrible decision. This was the first November 11 in 30 years that my son was not permitted to wear a poppy to remember his grandfathers and their sacrifices during World War II

Law of the Garbage Truck

A dear friend sent me this a little while ago I just read it again. I laughed so hard that I interrupted my husband's rant on his computer. He had to see what I was laughing about. Instead of laughing, he said, "I see that kind of driving every day on the freeway and the streets of Vancouver. I am not that cool about it all."
Maybe it would be a good time to switch our reactions to this kind of driver and spread some good vibes. Tell me what you think.

Law of the Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were
driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a
parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his
brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of
the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi
driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really
friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined
your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my taxi driver
taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around
full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of
disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it
and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally.
Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage
and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.
The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take
over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets,
so...Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.
Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

A Deeply Moving Story

This story was sent to me by a friend with a request to pass it on. I considered passing it along through email, but changed my mind before I sent it out. My blog seems to be a much better way to pass it on. I found the story deeply moving. Made me rethink the pressure that I put on myself to be successful.

Fom Pat:

So I walked to the door and knocked. 'Just a minute', answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with

a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie.

By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets.

There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

'Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.

She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I told her. 'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated'.

'Oh, you're such a good boy', she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address, and then asked, 'Could you drive through downtown?'

'It's not the shortest way,' I answered quickly.

'Oh, I don't mind,' she said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice'.

I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have any family left,' she continued. 'The doctor says I don't have

very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.

'What route would you like me to take?' I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator..

We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm tired. Let's go now'

We drove in silence to the address she had given me.It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.

Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.

'How much do I owe you?' she asked, reaching into her purse.

'Nothing,' I said

'You have to make a living,' she answered.

'There are other passengers,' I responded.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.

'You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,' she said.

'Thank you.'

I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light.. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.

I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if

that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift?

What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?

On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life.

We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments

But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID, ~BUT~THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL.

The full story on fats

For the past two decades, low fat, low cholesterol is the mantra of those trying to lose weight, prevent cancer and avoid heart disease. In light of recent studies however, this view is outdated.

Detailed research - particularly that done at Harvard - shows that the total amount of fat in the diet, whether high or low, has no real link with disease. Rather, what really matters is the type of fat in the diet. There are bad fats that increase the risk for certain diseases and good fats that lower the risk. The key is to substitute good fats for bad fats.

Furthermore, low fat diets do not offer an advantage in losing body fat, and in fact are often counterproductive as they cause an increase in muscle loss when compared to high-protein/moderate-fat diets like the Metabolic Diet. The Metabolic Diet and its two main derivatives, the Anabolic Solution and the Radical Diet, use a low-carbohydrate approach to optimize your body’s anabolic and lipolytic hormones to give you the body you want.

How about cholesterol? How bad it is depends on where it is. As it turns out, dietary cholesterol is bad for your heart but it is not the total villain in the picture. The bigger villain is blood cholesterol–the cholesterol circulating in your blood.

High blood cholesterol levels greatly increase the risk for heart disease. But surprisingly, the amount of cholesterol in food is not very strongly linked to cholesterol levels in the blood. What greatly affects blood cholesterol is the mix of fats in the diet.

Too much cholesterol in the blood, though, can lead to problems. In the 1960s and 70s, scientists established a link between high blood cholesterol levels and heart disease. Deposits of cholesterol can build up inside arteries. These deposits, called plaque, can narrow an artery enough to slow or block blood flow. This narrowing process, called atherosclerosis, commonly occurs in arteries that nourish the heart (the coronary arteries).

When one or more sections of heart muscle fail to get the blood, and thus the oxygen and nutrients, they need, the result may be the chest pain known as angina. In addition, plaque can rupture, causing blood clots that may lead to heart attack, stroke, or sudden death. Fortunately, the buildup of cholesterol can be slowed, stopped, and possibly even reversed.

Cholesterol-carrying lipoproteins play a central role the development of atherosclerotic plaque and cardiovascular disease.

The two main types basically work in opposite directions:

Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) carry cholesterol from the liver to the rest of the body. When there is too much LDL cholesterol in the blood, it can be deposited on the walls of the coronary arteries. Because of this, LDL cholesterol is often referred to as the ‘bad’ cholesterol.

High-density lipoproteins (HDL) carry cholesterol from the blood back to the liver, which processes the cholesterol for elimination from the body. HDL makes it less likely that excess cholesterol in the blood will be deposited in the coronary arteries, which is why HDL cholesterol is often referred to as the ‘good’ cholesterol.

When you have your cholesterol checked, the results will indicate your total blood cholesterol level. If you fasted overnight before giving a blood sample, the test results should also include separate counts or your HDL and LDL. In general, the higher your LDL and the lower your HDL, the greater your risk for atherosclerosis and heart disease.

For adults age 20 years or over, the most recent federal guidelines - From the National Cholesterol Education Program - Recommend the following target levels.

Dietary Fat, Dietary Cholesterol & Blood Cholesterol

How much cholesterol you’ll have in your blood will depend not so much on total fat you consume butthe type of fat you have had. Cholesterol in the diet contributes too but not as much as people supposed. Egg, for example, had proven to be not as bad as once thought in so far as heart fitness is concerned.

Moderate consumption like one a day does not increase heart disease risk in healthy individuals. While it’s true that egg yolks have a lot of cholesterol and, therefore may slightly affect blood cholesterollevels, eggs also contain nutrients that may help lower the risk for heart disease, including protein, vitamins B12 and D, riboflavin, and folate.

The Villains: Bad Dietary Fats

Saturated Fats. Saturated fats are mainly animal fats. They are found in meat, seafood, whole-milk dairy products (cheese, milk, and ice cream), poultry skin, and egg yolks. Some plant foods are also high in saturated fats, including coconut and coconut oil, palm oil, and palm kernel oil. While saturated fats raise total blood cholesterol levels more than dietary cholesterol does, theytend to raise both the ‘good’ HDL and the ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol.

Trans Fats. Trans fatty acids are fats produced by heating liquid vegetable oils in the presence of hydrogen. This process is known as hydrogenation. The more hydrogenated an oil is, the harder it will be at room temperature. For example, a spreadable tub margarine is less hydrogenated and so has fewer trans fats than a stick margarine.

Most of the trans fats in the American diet are found in commercially prepared baked goods, margarines, snack foods, and processed foods. Commercially prepared fried foods, like French fries and onion rings, also contain a good deal of trans fat.

Trans fats are worse for cholesterol levels than saturated fats because they not only raise LDL (bad) cholesterol, but also lower HDL (good) cholesterol.

The Heroes: Good Dietary Fats

Unsaturated fats are found in products derived from plant sources, such as vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. There are two main categories: polyunsaturated fats (which are found in high concentrations in sunflower, corn, and soybean oils) and monounsaturated fats (which are found in high concentrations in canola, peanut, and olive oils).

In studies in which polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats were eaten in place of carbohydrates (in low-carb diets like the Metabolic Diet), these good fats decreased LDL levels and increased HDL levels.

Dietary Fats & Heart Disease - Beyond The ‘30%’ Recommendation

Many health agencies, including the American Dietetic Association, the American Diabetes Association, and the American Heart Association, recommend limiting fat intake to 30% or less of total daily calories as a means of preventing disease. However, there is no good evidence for any particular ‘optimal’ amount of total fat in a healthy diet.

The relation of fat intake to health is one of the areas that Harvard researchers have examined in detail over the last 20 years in two large studies. The Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study have found no link between the overall percentage of calories from fat and any important health outcome, including cancer, heart disease, and weight gain.

What they have found to be important is the type of fat in the diet. There are clear links between the different types of dietary fats and heart disease. Logically, most of the influence that fat intake has on heart disease is due to its effect on blood cholesterol levels.

Of the bad fats - saturated and trans fats - trans fats are far worse when it comes to heart disease. The Nurses’ Health Study found that replacing only 30 calories (7 grams) of carbohydrates every day with 30 calories (4 grams) of trans fats nearly doubled the risk for heart disease. Saturated fats increased risk as well, but not nearly as much.

For the good fats, there is consistent evidence that high intake of either monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fat lowers the risk for heart disease. In the Nurses’ Health Study, Harvard researchers found that replacing 80 calories of carbohydrates with 80 calories of either polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats lowered the risk for heart disease by about 30 to 40 percent.

Fish, an important source of the polyunsaturated fat known as omega-3, has received much attention in the past for its potential to lower heart disease risk. And there have been some studies to back this up, although not all have shown consistent benefits. One recent large trial, however, found that by getting 1 gram per day of omega-3 fatty acids over a 3.5 year period, patients who had previous suffered heart attacks could lower their risk of dying from heart disease by 25 percent.

(To get that amount of omega-3 fatty acids would require the equivalent of 1 daily serving of fatty fish, such as mackerel, salmon, sardines, or swordfish.) Although more research is needed, adding fish to the diet may help protect you from heart disease, and it doesn’t have any known risks. The American Heart Association currently recommends that everyone eat at least two servings of fish a week.

Dietary Fat & Obesity

It is a common belief that the more fat you eat, the more body fat you put on, and the more weight you gain. This belief has been bolstered by much of the nutrition advice given to people over the past decade, which has focused on lowering total fat intake while increasing carbohydrate intake. However, current data show that this advice has been misguided. While total fat intake nationwide has dropped over the last decade, rates of obesity have increased steeply.

Most studies show that over the short term, a low-fat diet does result in weight loss. But many diets show such benefits over the short term. On the other hand, low-fat diets appear to offer no substantial advantages over diets with fat levels close to the national average.

Although more research is needed, a prudent recommendation for losing weight or maintain a healthy weight is to be mindful of the amount of food you eat in relation to the amount of calories you burn in a day. Exercising regularly is especially beneficial.

The Bottom Line - Recommendations For Fat Intake

Although the different types of fat have a varied - and admittedly confusing - effect on health and disease, the basic message is simple: limit the bad fats and replace them with good fats. Try to reduce both the trans and saturated fats in your diet as much as possible and replace them with polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.

The trickiest of these to attack are the trans fats. That’s because they lurk in many different types of foods and aren’t always included on the food label. But as awareness about trans fats increases, more ‘trans-fat’ free products are becoming available.

This is particularly so in Europe, but many items are also making their appearance in the North America, including trans-fat free margarine (which may also be labeled as ‘non-hydrogenated’margarine). Such labeling of trans fat content has long been up to the food maker’s discretion.

However, a report on trans fats from the Institute of Medicine concluding that there is no safe level of trans fats in the diet has finally prompted the (US) Food and Drug Administration to require that trans fats be listed as part of the Nutrition Facts food label. This decision came after several years of hearings, comments, and negotiations.

Until labels listing trans fats appear, which will probably take a year or more, it will take some detective work to determine if a food contains trans fats. Check the ingredient list for ‘hydrogenated oils.’ The higher up these are listed, the more trans fats the food contains.

Tips For Lowering Trans Fat Intake:

Choose liquid vegetable oils or a soft tub margarine that is contains little or no trans fats.
Reduce intake of commercially prepared baked goods, snack foods, and processed foods, including fast foods.
When foods containing hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils can’t be avoided, choose products that list the hydrogenated oils near the end of the ingredient list.

Diabetes costly among older Americans

Diabetes is harming the nation’s economy as well as its health, according to a University of Michigan study showing that lost productivity among diabetic Americans born between 1931 and 1941 cost the country nearly $133.5 billion by the year 2000.

“Diabetes has a staggering economic impact as well as serious health effects,” said University of Michigan researcher Sandeep Vijan, an assistant professor of internal medicine and lead author of the study, which was funded in part by the Michigan Retirement Research Center at the university’s Institute for Social Research.

About 18.2 million Americans are estimated to have diabetes, and given the aging of the population and the dramatic increase in obesity and sedentary lifestyles even among the young, the prevalence of diabetes is increasing at an epidemic rate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta recently estimated that given current trends, one in three people born today will develop the disease.

For the study, published in the December issue of Health Services Research, Vijan and University of Michigan co-authors Rodney Hayward and Kenneth Langa analyzed diabetes-associated mortality, disability, early retirement and work absenteeism among a national household sample of older adults interviewed over an eight-year period. Their analysis was funded primarily by the Social Security Administration, using data from the Health and Retirement Study conducted by the Institute for Social Research.

Funded by the National Institute on Aging, the Health and Retirement Study has conducted interviews every two years since 1992 with a nationally representative sample of 22,000 Americans ages 50 and older to assess major trends in health and economic well-being.

Analyzing the health and work history of study participants who were born between 1931 and 1941, and controlling for other health conditions, the researchers found that diabetes was a significant predictor of lost productivity.

The average person with diabetes lost $2,800 in wages due to early retirement, $630 due to sick days, and $22,100 due to disability, the researchers discovered. When these results were extended to all diabetics born between 1931 and 1941 — 2.3 million people — the economic losses climbed to $58.6 billion. The study also found $60 billion in lost productivity prior to 1992 in the same age group, suggesting a total productivity loss due to diabetes of nearly $120 billion for the eight-year period analyzed.

The analysis excluded people who were already disabled by diabetes at the start of the study. When the lost productivity of this group was added, the economic toll of the disease mounted to $133.5 billion.

As the analysis was limited to Americans born between 1931 and 1941, the total cost of productivity lost as a result of diabetes is much greater, the researchers said.

Still, they point out that there is room for hope, as some of the economic impact of the disease can be attenuated.

“Many diabetes complications are preventable through increased physical activity, improved diet and reduced obesity,” said Langa, an assistant professor of internal medicine and a faculty associate at the Institute for Social Research.

Vijan said that realizing the high economic toll of the disease, employers could offer exercise programs in the workplace, provide and encourage healthy food choices for employees or support disease management programs, all of which can reduce long-term risks of diabetes and its complications.

“Our analyses suggest that such programs are likely to recoup substantial economic gains,” Vijan said. “Indeed, economic analyses of diabetes treatment programs should explicitly consider these individual and societal costs, and policy-makers and others who allocate public health and health care resources should be aware of the potential cost savings of improving diabetes treatment programs.”

Broccoli may help boost the aging immune system

Eat your broccoli! That’s the advice from University of California. Los Angeles, researchers who have found that a chemical in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables may hold a key to restoring the body’s immunity, which declines as we age.

Published in an online edition of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the study findings show that sulforaphane, a chemical in broccoli, switches on a set of antioxidant genes and enzymes in specific immune cells, which then combat the injurious effects of molecules known as free radicals that can damage cells and lead to disease.

Free radicals are byproducts of normal body processes, such as the metabolic conversion of food into energy, and can also enter the body through small particles present in polluted air. A supercharged form of oxygen, these molecules can cause oxidative tissue damage, leading to disease — for example, triggering the inflammation process that causes clogged arteries. Oxidative damage to body tissues and organs is thought to be one of the major causes of aging.

“The mysteries of aging have always intrigued man,” said Andre Nel, MD, the study’s principal investigator and chief of nanomedicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. “While we have known for some time that free radicals are important in aging, most of the past attention has focused on the mechanisms that produce free radicals rather than addressing the pathways used by the body to suppress their production.”

A dynamic equilibrium exists in the body between the mechanisms that lead to increased free radical production and those antioxidant pathways that help combat free radicals.

“Our study contributes to the growing understanding of the importance of these antioxidant defense pathways that the body uses to fight free radicals,” said Nel, a practicing clinical allergist and immunologist at the Geffen School. “Insight into these processes points to ways in which we may be able to alleviate the effects of aging.”

The delicate balance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant forces in the body could determine the outcome of many disease processes that are associated with aging, including cardiovascular disease, degenerative joint diseases and diabetes, as well as the decline in efficiency of the immune system’s ability to protect against infectious agents.

“As we age, the ability of the immune system to fight disease and infections and protect against cancer wears down as a result of the impact of oxygen radicals on the immune system,” Nel said.

According to the UCLA study, the ability of aged tissues to reinvigorate their antioxidant defense can play an important role in reversing much of the negative impact of free radicals on the immune system. However, until this current study, the extent to which antioxidant defense can impact the aging process in the immune system was not properly understood.

“Our defense against oxidative stress damage may determine at what rate we age, how it will manifest and how to interfere in those processes,” Nel said. “In particular, our study shows that a chemical present in broccoli is capable of stimulating a wide range of antioxidant defense pathways and may be able to interfere with the age-related decline in immune function.”

The UCLA team not only found that the direct administration of sulforaphane in broccoli reversed the decline in cellular immune function in old mice, but they witnessed similar results when they took individual immune cells from old mice, treated those cells with the chemical outside the body and then placed the treated cells back into a recipient animal.

In particular, the scientists discovered that dendritic cells, which introduce infectious agents and foreign substances to the immune system, were particularly effective in restoring immune function in aged animals when treated with sulforaphane.

“We found that treating older mice with sulforaphane increased the immune response to the level of younger mice,” said Hyon-Jeen Kim, first author and research scientist at the Geffen School.

To investigate how the chemical in broccoli increased the immune system’s response, the UCLA group confirmed that sulforaphane interacts with a protein called Nrf2, which serves as a master regulator of the body’s overall antioxidant response and is capable of switching on hundreds of antioxidant and rejuvenating genes and enzymes.

Nel said that the chemistry leading to activation of this gene-regulation pathway could be a platform for drug discovery and vaccine development to boost the decline of immune function in elderly people.

“This is a radical new way of thinking in how to increase the immune function of elderly people to possibly protect against viral infections and cancer,” Nel said. “We may have uncovered a new mechanism by which to boost vaccine responses by using a nutrient chemical to impact oxidant stress pathways in the immune system.”

Kim said that although there is a decline in Nrf2 activity with aging, this pathway remains accessible to chemicals like sulforaphane that are capable of restoring some of the ravages of aging by boosting antioxidant pathways.

The next step is further study to see how these findings would translate to humans.

“Dietary antioxidants have been shown to have important effects on immune function, and with further study, we may be adding broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables to that list,” Nel said.

For now, Nel suggests including these vegetables as part of a healthy diet.

Nel said that these findings offer a window into how the immune system ages.

“We may find that combating free radicals is only part of the answer, Nel said. “It may prove to be a more multifaceted process and interplay between pro- and antioxidant forces.”

ARE YOU GETTING YOUR PROTEIN?

Combining the right foods to get the correct amount and type of protein can be tricky. Mauro Di Pasquale, M.D. gives you tips on what foods you should concentrate on.

In general, proteins of animal origin contain adequate amounts of the essential amino acids and hence they are known as first class proteins. On the other hand, many proteins of vegetable origin are relatively deficient in certain amino acids, notably lysine and the sulphur-containing amino acids.

Mixtures of plant proteins can serve as a complete and well-balanced source of amino acids for meeting human physiological requirements. However the combining of right foods is necessary to obtain the necessary levels of both the essential or indispensable and conditionally indispensable amino acids.

The essential amino acid lysine is consistently at a much lower concentration in all major plant-food protein groups than in animal foods. Since lysine is the limiting amino acid, the addition of limited amounts of lysine to cereal diets improves their protein quality. Studies in Peru and Guatemala have demonstrated that growing children benefited by this addition. In addition, the sulphur-containing amino acids are distinctly lower in legumes and fruits and threonine is lower in cereals compared with amounts found in proteins of animal origin.

Complementary Proteins

There are important differences among and between food products of vegetable and animal origin including the concentrations of proteins and indispensable amino acids that they contain. The concentration of protein and the quality of the protein in some foods of vegetable origin may be too low to make them adequate, sole sources of proteins. In some of the poorer parts of the world, diets are based predominantly on a single plant (e.g. corn) and they frequently lead to malnutrition.

Fortunately, the amino acid deficiencies in a protein can usually be improved by combining it with another so that the mixture of the two proteins will often have a higher food value than either one alone. For example, many cereals are low in lysine, but high in methionine and cysteine. On the other hand, soybeans, Lima beans, and kidney beans are high in lysine but low in methionine and cysteine. When eaten together these types of proteins give a more favorable amino acid profile.

Another example would be the combination of soybean, which is low in sulphur-containing amino acids, with cottonseed, peanut and sesame flour, and cereal grains, which are deficient mainly in lysine. In general oil-seed proteins, in particular, soy protein, can be used effectively in combination with most cereal grains to improve the overall quality of the total protein intake. A combination of soy protein, which is high in lysine, with a cereal that contains a relatively good concentration of sulphur containing amino acids results in a nutritional complementation; the protein quality of the mixture is greater than that for either protein source alone.

Some examples of complementary food proteins include:

Beans and corn (as in tortillas)
Rice and black-eyed peas
Whole wheat or bulgar
Soybeans
Sesame seeds
Soybeans
Peanuts
Brown rice
Bulgar wheat
This kind of supplementation works when the deficient and complementary proteins are ingested together or within a few hours of each other. Various nutritional responses are observed when two dietary proteins are combined. These have been classified by Bressani et al into one of four types.

Type I is an example where no protein complementary effect is achieved. For example, this occurs with combinations of peanut and corn, where each of the protein sources have a common and quantitatively similar lysine deficiency and are both also deficient in other amino acids.

Type II response is observed when combinations are made of two protein sources that have the same limiting amino acid, but in quantitatively different amounts. Corn and cottonseed flour, for example, are both limiting in lysine but cottonseed is relatively less inadequate than is corn.

The third type of response (Type III) demonstrates a true complementary effect because there is a synergistic effect on the overall nutritive value of the protein mixture; the protein quality of the best mix exceeds that of each component alone. This type of response occurs when one of the protein sources has a considerably higher concentration of the most limiting amino acid in the other protein. An example of this response, based on studies in children, is observed when corn and soy flour are mixed so that 60% of the protein intake comes from corn and the remainder from soya protein.

Finally, the Type IV response occurs when both protein sources have a common amino acid deficiency. The protein component giving the highest value is the one containing a higher concentration of the deficient amino acid. Combinations of some textured soy proteins and beef protein follow this type of response.

These nutritional relationships have been determined from rat bioassay studies. However, the more limited results available from human studies with soy and other legumes confirm the applicability of this general concept in human nutrition. This knowledge helps us to understand and evaluate how nutritionally effective combinations of plant protein foods can be achieved.

Even when combinations of plant protein foods are used there is still the concern of timing of ingestion of complementary proteins. Is there a need to ingest different plant proteins at the same time, or within the same meal, to achieve maximum benefit and nutritional value from proteins with different, but complementary, amino acid patterns? This concern may also extend to the question of the need to ingest a significant amount of protein at each meal, or whether it is sufficient to consume protein in variable amounts at different meals and even different days as long as the average daily intake meets or exceeds the recommended or safe protein intakes.

According to FAO/WHO/UNU, estimates of protein requirements refer to metabolic needs that persist over moderate periods of time. However, the body does not store much protein outside of a meager free amino acid pool, and begins certain catabolic processes in the post absorptive phase making the ingestion of regular amounts of protein critical for maximizing the anabolic effects of exercise.

Dogs and Fitness?

Ok, so it’s easy to read all about working out, and eating right. There are a zillion books and magazine articles on slimming down, and pumping up. Plus everyone these days seems to have a sure fire work out video, or weight loss product. But…if all that knowledge and all those products are out there, why is it still so tough for the average American to have a fit and healthy body? Why are so many of us out of shape and overweight?

What’s the difference between me (and you?) and all those conscientious “gym rats” breaking a sweat spinning, lifting weights, and twisting into pretzel poses on yoga mats? Those disciplined eaters who happily consume their daily dose of fruits and veggies and manage to “just say no” to the fast food traps?

They’re doing, I’m procrastinating. They’re feeling fit and energized. I’m feeling flabby and guilty. They’re eating to live. I sometimes feel like I’m living to eat!

It’s all about the lack of motivation and self-discipline. That’s the biggest problem we face…and darn it …there isn’t any pill we can buy to fix it.

We have to find that motivation and self-discipline the old fashioned way. From deep inside. No one can do it for us. We have to make a commitment that we want something better for ourselves. We have to be willing to make some small, but significant changes in our daily life.

“Motivation starts with baby steps”, figure champ Natalie Waples tells me. “Set a small goal like taking a walk everyday or every other day for 15 or 20 minutes with your spouse, your dog, your friends. Sign up for a package of swimming lessons. Try to find an activity that you have always enjoyed, so it’s not so daunting a task. Social Marketing - Is it any good?

I have been reading a lot of emails talking about the future of social networking sites for business. I have tried a couple of them out too. I use Facebook quite a lot, and have built up a following on Twitter also. Then I checked out ZenZuu.
I like the updated look of the site. It is still under construction, so new things are being added all the time. It has a streamlined look that Facebook does not have. There are so many out there now to check out that it will take me a long time to test each one.

I can see that there could be a srong marketing influence from using these sites. Making friends and influencing people goes naturally with the social atmosphere. It is not for everyone, however. If you don't like idle chatter once and a while or don't care to talk about yourself, then it may not by your cup of tea. I find them enjoyable.

I have to say I like ZenZuu the best so far. Not that I am trying to coerce anyone to get on board! I like the way the profits are shared between all the members. I also like the cost - it's free to join.

Today I Will Make A Difference

I will begin by controlling my thoughts. A person is the product of their thoughts. I want to be happy and hopeful. Therefore, I will have thoughts that are happy and hopeful. I refuse to be victimized by my circumstances. I will not let petty inconveniences such as stoplights, long lines, and traffic jams be my masters. I will avoid negativism and gossip. Optimism will be my companion, and victory will be my hallmark.

Today I will make a difference.

I will be grateful for the twenty-four hours that are before me. Time is a precious commodity. I refuse to allow what little time I have to be contaminated by self-pity, anxiety, or boredom. I will face this day with the joy of a child and the courage of a giant. I will drink each minute as though it is my last. When tomorrow comes, today will be gone forever. While it is here, I will use it for loving and giving.

Today I will make a difference.

I will not let past failures haunt me. Even though my life is scarred with mistakes, I refuse to rummage through my trash heap of failures. I will admit them. I will correct them. I will press on. Victoriously. No failure is fatal. It's OK to stumble - I will get up. It's OK to fail - I will rise again.

Today I will make a difference.

I will spend time with those I love. My spouse, my children, my family. A man can own the world but be poor for the lack of love. A man can own nothing and yet be wealthy in relationships. Today I will spend at least five minutes with the significant people in my world. Five quality minutes of talking or hugging or thanking or listening. Five undiluted minutes with my mate, children, and friends.

Psoriasis, an ongoing problem

PSORIASIS can be extremely painful, messy, embarassing, itchy like you would not believe, bloody, distracting, need I go on?

My psoriasis was not diagnosed properly for years. It was called a nervous rash, an infection, an ulcer, dry skin, and the list goes on.

I was walking in blood. I could never take off my shoes until I was home.

Monday blues can be beaten.

I suspect few would suggest their Monday Mornings to flow
like a good melody. Most would confess that they usually find
a form of madness invades their Mondays as they transition
from the weekend. We have scores of "to dos" lined up for us
at work (the list always grows over the weekend) and Monday
morning is when we find out there is grass to cut, soccer players
to deliver (and pick up), permission forms to sign, band practice
to help with, Aunt Alice needs to be taken to the doctor, and on
and on and on. No wonder we get up tight. We see to many
demands and not enough time.

This "Monday morning crunch" can put us in a low energy
state. We can find ourselves feeling anxious, fearful, defensive,
resentful, and even angry. If we allowed the weekend to be just
as demanding, we can find ourselves feeling exhausted,
hopeless, defeated and burned out before the work week even
starts. If this describes you, how engaged at work will you be?
Will you be productive, energized, and creative? It's doubtful.

So what can you do to optimize your weekend to help ensure
you arrive on Monday in a high-energy state? Is it possible to
feel relaxed, peaceful, even tranquil when Monday morning
rolls around? Can you arrive at work invigorated, confident
even joyful?

It's not only possible but also can even become
"likely" if you learn to use your weekend to renew your energy.
The weekend should be a time to recharge your batteries so that
